Research on bereavement, presented by CCL Senior Research Scientist Diane Bergeron, PhD, at the SHRM Annual Conference, recently appeared in a SHRM article entitled “Why Employers Need to Step Up on Bereavement Benefits.” The article describes Bergeron’s presentation and some of the research she presented – highlighting the ways in which bereavement leave falls short (e.g., narrow definitions of familial relationships; bereaved employees needing to supplement their leave with vacation or sick days). In addition, it lists some of her suggestions on other ways that organizations can better support bereaved employees (e.g., providing non-consecutive leave days; acknowledging the loss; bereavement support apps) while acknowledging that more paid days off for bereavement was the No. 1 recommendation that emerged from CCL’s research on bereaved employees.
