In the world of leadership training, a popular tool is the 360-degree assessment. This is where leaders rate their own skills and also get feedback from others like their colleagues, direct reports, and bosses. While these assessments are super useful, scoring them can be a bit challenging.
This article looks at a new way of scoring these assessments. The researchers tried out a new scoring method called the Latent Approximation Method (LAM) and compared it to the standard scoring method. They tested it out on a global scale of about 17,000 leaders and 150,000 raters from 120 countries.
The results? While the new method had some benefits, overall, the researchers found that it didn’t offer significant advantages over the simpler traditional approach in most cases. The study concludes that the more complex scoring method may not be necessary for interpreting 360-degree assessments, but suggests areas for future research to potentially improve leadership development practices.
